In December 2024, Ghana will once again be at a crossroads as it prepares for its general election on the 7th. As one of Africa's leading democracies, Ghana's electoral process draws international attention for its significance in shaping the country's political landscape.
The vice president, Dr. Bawumia, met with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo last Tuesday at the Jubilee House to discuss his selection of running mate for the elections scheduled for December 7. During that discussion, the President gave guidance and expressed his opinions regarding the flag bearer's selection. Prior to his eventual unveiling, Dr. Prempeh, also known as "Napo," will now be formally introduced to the party's National Council. Several candidates have been suggested as possible running mates for Dr. Bawumia prior to the meeting. The Minister of Energy, Dr. Opoku Prempeh, defeated other potential contenders, including Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Minister of Education, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, the Chief of Staff, among others.
The Manhyia South Member of Parliament (MP) has royal ancestry at the Manhyia Palace's Apagyafie, and he is the nephew of former President John Agyekum Kufuor. Not only is his constituency a party stronghold, but in the 2020 election, it gave the NPP 83% of the presidential votes. Manhyia South Constituency gave Dr. Bawumia 478 votes out of the 559 legitimate votes cast in the battle to choose the party's flag bearer in November of last year. This represents 85.5% of the total votes cast. Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia of the NPP and former President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will square off in the December presidential election.
Both parties have a lot on the line as the NPP aims to win a third term and Mr Mahama and the NDC want to avoid losing for the third time in a row. Ghanaians will cast their ballots for 275 MPs and a new president on December 7. Since the nation returned to constitutional governance in 1992, there will be nine successive elections in this country. Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the running mate of opposition candidate John Mahama, who is attempting a return after losing the 2016 elections to President Akufo-Addo, will square off against Dr. Opoku Prempeh when she is presented.
Additionally, he obtained authorization for the effective hiring of more than 93,725 teaching and non-teaching personnel, significantly reducing the student-teacher ratio at the pre-tertiary level.
Challenges he has faced as the Energy Minister is that, the utility firms have financial constraints that hinder them from making large investments to enhance the sector. These issues include high levels of distribution losses, non-payment of bills leading to a lack of revenue, and an inadequate tariff structure.
Could this selection lead to victory come December 7,2024 as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) prepares to break the "8"?
Well, Ghanaians will decide on that.
So can the Npp win this election 🥹
