In a bold move, Organised Labour has declared an indefinite nationwide strike, effective immediately, until the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) terminates its controversial deal to sell 60% shares of four hotels.
This decisive action underscores the unions' unwavering commitment to protecting the interests of workers and the general public.
The strike, which commenced on Monday, July 15, has brought activities in various sectors to a grinding halt, as workers across the country have put down their tools in solidarity. The unions are protesting the proposed sale of SSNIT shares, which they believe would compromise the integrity of the social security system and jeopardize the benefits of contributors.
"We will not stand idly by while the government and SSNIT management undermine the hard-earned contributions of workers," declared Dr. Yaw Baah, Secretary-General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC). "We demand an immediate termination of this ill-conceived deal and a commitment to transparency and accountability in the management of SSNIT funds."
The indefinite strike has garnered widespread support from various stakeholders, including civil society organizations and concerned citizens. As the standoff continues, the government and SSNIT management are under mounting pressure to reconsider their decision and engage in meaningful dialogue with Organised Labour.
